Nellie's Buddies
“Nellie’s Buddies” is a very close to the heart division of Hero Assistance Dogs. A place to recognize a broad spectrum of ways animals can make a difference in a person’s life. Here you will find our Reading Buddies, dogs working with special needs children, therapy dogs, and much more. As Nellie’s Buddies grows, we will also be adding our own children’s stories based around the everyday lives of our assistance animals. These are the various community involvement programs which Heroes provides free of charge to the public.
People ask who is Nellie? Our founder named this portion of Heroes in memory of her parents using their nicknames, Nell and Whitey. Both had a very special place in their heart for children and people living with difficulties. They were both patient, kind, and willing to teach a child how to make the most of their lives. The word “Buddies” comes from her mother’s Newfoundland heritage… as Newfoundlanders never meet a stranger and refer to others affectionately as “buddy”. The two yellow butterflies represents each of our founder’s parents, in remembrance of the childhood stories told to her about the special yellow butterflies.
